Freedom Fridays: Navigating Privileges and Constraints

On select Fridays, we will be discussing various facets of freedom and how they contribute to wellbeing. Whether we face oppression, experience challenging situations that are beyond our control, or are caught up in the midst of active stressors, we can pause to examine our power and build internal and collective resilience.

That said, too much freedom can provide diminishing returns. We may feel bored, unmotivated, or confused without appropriate structure or engaging challenges to overcome.

Journal Prompt

(as with any prompt provided, use your personal discernment to decide if it is useful to you or not)

Create two columns. In one column, write down memories of feeling free, privileges you enjoy, and things you feel grateful for. In the other column, write down constraints you have experienced which seemed helpful to you and appreciations for yourself about how you navigated them. Consider coming up with about 10 items for each column.

Example items:

  1. I live near a store where I have choices for what kind of produce I can buy.

  2. I appreciate myself for adapting to learn how to make several new recipes with a toaster oven because I no longer have a regular oven.

Trust your mind to come up with any items it wants, however significant or insignificant they seem.
